This name has been given to a number of different stops at a variety of pitches. In Germany in the 1800's it was used for both an 8' open wooden flute similar to a large scale Hohlflöte, and for 16' stopped wooden flutes of both large and small scale. It has also been used for a variety of Tibia Plena. Wedgwood considers it a synonym for Flauto Major.
